The Ceylon Society of Arts promoted an academic, European-style approach to painting in colonial-era Sri Lanka: realistic proportion and perspective, formal subjects such as portraits and landscapes, and training modelled on Western art schools.
Its real significance in the syllabus is as the backdrop the '43 Group defined itself against - understanding what the Society stood for is what makes the '43 Group's modernist break make sense, so this lesson is best studied as a pair with that one rather than on its own.
