Three hand-building techniques cover almost everything at this level: pinch (pressing a ball of clay into a hollow form with the thumbs), coil (building walls up from rolled ropes of clay, smoothed together), and slab (cutting and joining flat sheets, used for straight-sided forms).
Sri Lanka has long-standing pottery traditions built on exactly these techniques, still practised by village potters using a kick wheel or hand-building for cooking pots, water vessels and decorative ware - the craft this lesson is teaching is not a classroom invention but a living local skill.
