Ancient Egyptian art followed a strict, long-lasting convention rather than observed reality: the human figure drawn with head and legs in profile but the torso and eye facing forward (composite view), figures scaled by importance rather than by distance, and a flat, outlined style with little shading.
Exam questions on Egyptian art almost always ask for a comparison with Sri Lankan art of a similar period, so prepare the contrast directly rather than describing either tradition in isolation: where Egyptian figures are governed by a fixed formula meant to last unchanged for millennia, Sri Lankan mural and sculptural figures (as at Sigiriya or in Kandyan-period work) show far more stylistic development and regional variation over time.
