Designing a lampshade is an applied-design brief with a real constraint most flat design work doesn't have: the surface is curved and lit from within, so a pattern has to be planned to wrap around the form and to read differently in silhouette (light off) than in glow (light on).
Cut-out or pierced pattern is worth trying specifically for this brief, since it uses the light itself as part of the design rather than working against it - plan the negative space (what's cut away) with as much care as the positive shapes.
