Tissa Ranasinghe (1925-2018) was a Sri Lankan sculptor best known for bronze figurative work, made using the lost-wax casting method - a technique with real historical depth in Sri Lanka, going back to Chola-period bronzes centuries earlier. He trained and worked substantially in the United Kingdom, which shaped a practice that combined a modern sculptural sensibility with subjects and forms rooted in South Asian tradition.
When a question names a sculptor rather than a painter, it's usually testing whether you can discuss form in three dimensions specifically - weight, volume, the way a bronze surface catches light - rather than composition and colour, which is what most of this unit's other artists are assessed on.
