The '43 Group, formed in 1943, is the pivotal moment in Sri Lankan modern art: a collective including George Keyt, Lionel Wendt, Ivan Peries, Harry Pieris, Justin Deraniyagala and George Claessen among others, who broke from the academic realism of the Ceylon Art Society toward modernist styles - influenced by Cubism, Post-Impressionism and European modernism generally - while largely keeping Sri Lankan subject matter.
The name to hold onto for a synthesis answer is exactly the same one used for George Keyt earlier in the syllabus: a foreign, modern visual language applied to distinctly local subject matter. The '43 Group is that same idea at the scale of a whole movement rather than a single painter, so the two lessons are best revised together.
