A mosque's design follows from a specific rule: figurative images of people or animals are avoided in the prayer space, so its decoration is built from geometric pattern and calligraphy instead - tessellating star-and-polygon patterns, repeated arches, and a dome and minaret marking it on the skyline.
That constraint is worth understanding rather than skipping past, because it explains why Islamic architectural decoration became so advanced at pure pattern-making - the geometry had to carry all of the visual interest on its own.
