Frida Kahlo (1907-1954) is known above all for self-portraiture - roughly a third of her paintings are self-portraits - using a style drawing on Mexican folk art traditions (bold colour, flattened space, symbolic objects) to work through deeply personal subject matter: physical pain following a near-fatal accident in her youth, and her own identity.
Her work is generally discussed as distinct from Surrealism despite being shown alongside Surrealists in her lifetime - she herself said she painted her own reality rather than dreams, which is worth stating directly if a question invites a comparison between her and the Surrealism covered elsewhere in this unit.
